Helicopter Underwater Escape Training’s (HUET) purpose is to prepare appropriate personnel for emergency exit in the case of a crash landing over water. While the training may be taken by crew and frequent passengers in all small aircraft that could ditch over water, a fixed wing aircraft such as a seaplane or small jet is not as prone to roll over as quickly or sink as rapidly as a helicopter. In addition, due to the slow speed of helicopters their cabins have a greater chance of being intact with passengers inside when ditched in the water.

Main industry sectors requiring HUET training include helicopter flight crews, offshore industries such as oil and gas, law enforcement and military transport personnel.

The training involves simulated sinking in a pool while rotating the training module upside down and focuses students on bracing for impact, identifying primary and secondary exit points, avoiding smoke inhalation, surfacing for air, and head counting.

The HUET training aims to increase time-saving awareness of situational characteristics that can prevent successful escape, such as the role of the seat belt to control excess buoyancy caused by the safety suits inside the helicopter, how to operate the external breathing system, and to carefully store away excess seat belt length.

HUET training program consists of the units:

  1. AVIF2014 Undertake aircraft underwater escape and survival
  2. AVIF2015 Utilise emergency breathing system
  3. PMAWHS214 Undertake helicopter safety and escape

HUET program delivery method

Training will be delivered face to face where the student will attend classes with qualified trainers and assessors, including practice and assessment of skills using a hands-on approach. An Online learning management system also supports the students during their course of study.

Training may be in a clustered format with multiple units commencing or in single unit delivery which will be determined on individual program requirements. This training plan requirement will be discussed with the organisation to suit locality and other needs.

Cost of HUET program

Fee for service cost of the HUET program starts at $550 pending location and other variables.
